How to Forgive Your Ex (and Why It Is for You)

Forgiveness is one of the most misunderstood parts of healing. Many people resist it because they think forgiving means excusing what happened, or letting someone off the hook. In reality, forgiveness is something you do for yourself, not for the person who hurt you.

Holding on to anger and resentment keeps you tied to the relationship long after it has ended. Every time you replay the wrong that was done, you hand a piece of your peace to the past. Forgiveness is the choice to stop carrying that weight, so you can finally set it down.

What forgiveness is not

Forgiving your ex does not mean you have to reconcile, stay in contact, or pretend the hurt did not matter. It does not require their apology or even their awareness. You can forgive someone and still keep them firmly out of your life. The two are not in conflict.

Releasing the weight

  • Acknowledge the hurt fully first. You cannot release what you have not allowed yourself to feel.
  • Remind yourself that forgiveness is a process, not a single moment. It can take time and may need revisiting.
  • Notice when resentment flares, and gently choose to loosen your grip rather than feed it.

Forgiveness does not happen all at once, and some days you will feel the anger return. That is normal. Each time you choose to release a little more, you reclaim energy that was stuck in the past. In the end, forgiveness is less about them and more about freeing yourself to move forward with a lighter heart.
