How to Heal When You Still Have to See Your Ex

No contact is powerful advice - but sometimes it isn't fully possible. If you work together, study together, share custody, or move in the same circles, you may have to keep seeing your ex while you're trying to heal. It's harder, but recovery is still within reach.

The challenge of forced contact

When you can't fully step away, every encounter can reopen the wound and reset your progress. You're denied the clean break that makes healing easier, and you have to manage your emotions in real time, often in front of others. That's genuinely difficult - acknowledge that you're doing something hard.

Strategies for unavoidable contact

  • Set the contact to the minimum necessary. Keep interactions polite, brief, and focused on what's required - work, logistics, co-parenting. You don't owe casual chit-chat.
  • Create distance where you can. You may have to see them in certain settings, but you can still mute them online, skip optional events for a while, and avoid one-on-one situations.
  • Have a reset ritual. After a hard encounter, do something that helps you decompress - a walk, a call with a friend, a few minutes alone. Don't carry the interaction with you all day.
  • Protect your private healing. You can be civil in shared spaces while still fully grieving and rebuilding in your own life. Public composure and private healing aren't in conflict.

Healing is still possible

Recovering while seeing your ex takes more patience, but people do it all the time - co-parents, coworkers, classmates. Over time, the encounters lose their charge. What once felt unbearable becomes simply a person you used to be with. You can get there, even without the luxury of distance.

Be extra gentle with yourself. You're healing on hard mode, and every steady encounter is a sign of real progress.
