Quieting Intrusive Thoughts About Your Ex

In the aftermath of a breakup, your ex can feel like they have taken up residence in your mind. Thoughts of them appear uninvited, in the shower, at work, as you fall asleep. These intrusive thoughts are exhausting, and they are also a normal part of how the brain processes a loss.

Why your mind keeps circling

Your brain is trying to make sense of a major change, so it keeps returning to the subject like a tongue finding a sore tooth. Fighting the thoughts directly often makes them louder. A gentler approach works better.

Loosening their grip

  • When a thought arrives, notice it without judging yourself, then gently guide your attention elsewhere.
  • Give your mind something absorbing to do, a task, a walk, a conversation, so it has somewhere else to go.
  • Remind yourself that a thought is just a thought, not a command to act or reach out.

It helps to expect the thoughts rather than be alarmed by them. They are a symptom of healing in progress, not a sign you are going backward.

As time passes, the thoughts come less often and carry less charge. The mind slowly turns its attention back to the present, and your ex stops occupying so much of your inner world.
