What to Do With the Memories, Gifts, and Photos

After a breakup, the reminders are everywhere - the hoodie that still smells like them, the photos filling your camera roll, the gift on your shelf. Deciding what to do with it all can feel paralyzing. The good news: there's no single right answer, and you don't have to decide today.

You don't have to choose between keeping everything and burning it all

The pressure to dramatically delete every photo or throw out every gift can actually backfire - sometimes it's just another intense reaction in a moment you're already overwhelmed. There's a gentler middle path.

A simple, no-pressure approach

  • Box it, don't bin it yet. Gather the physical reminders into a box and put it out of sight - a closet, under the bed, a friend's garage. Out of sight is enough for now. You can decide what to keep or let go of later, with a clearer head.
  • Archive the photos. Most phones let you hide or archive images instead of permanently deleting them. You stop seeing them every day without making a final, irreversible call while you're raw.
  • Reclaim the useful things. A gift that's genuinely useful - a jacket, a mug, headphones - doesn't have to carry meaning forever. Sometimes a thing can just become a thing again.

Let time make the decision easier

What feels impossible to part with this week may feel easy to release in a few months - and the reverse is true too. By putting the reminders away rather than forcing an immediate purge, you give yourself the option to decide from a calmer place.

The goal isn't to erase that the relationship happened. It's to stop the everyday reminders from reopening the wound before it's had a chance to heal.
